With Guardians' Creed we're receiving a plethora of new cards to support the Empires On The Rise Warlords, promote interactive gameplay, and to breath new life into smaller archetypes. Thanks to Taylor and Future Lore Studios, I'm able to bring you two of the brand new cards out of GCD, sure to shake up the meta and support some underrated archetypes!
The first of these two cards may be familiar for some eagle eyed players, or perhaps, owl eyed?
Can you guess what my favorite keyword is?
Swift and Snapshot may make for a relatively simple text box, but this Dazzling Archer look-alike has plenty of potential impact for the Frost Realm.
The Blastforge archetype typing is key here. Whilst Blastforge Aggro is the deck focused on making the most of the Blastforge synergy, Quartzheart Frost Tempo is currently the strongest deck making use of the Blastforge package of cards, and the first place I'm interesting in checking out.
Frost Tempo bridges the gap between the powerful control tools of Frost control and the aggressive power of the Blastforge. The main win-condition the deck leverages is Blastforge Melt-Cannon. A +6 Atk buff hits a lot harder thanks to the Frost Realms ample access to bounce spells, to return warriors and their Cannons back to your hand to replay and attack again.
Diary Of A Blastforge Survivor is currently a key component of this win-condition, as your main avenue to conscript additional warriors. Whilst Diary is still certainly a key card, Grue offers something brand new to the Blastforge archetype: the (Swift) keyword, giving Dwarves access to a warrior that can be swifted in from hand, and which can carry a Melt-Cannon (or three).
This ultimately lets Frost Tempo simplify it's combo kill lines and find wins through trickier situations; undoubtedly a huge boon to the deck.
True Blastforge aggro is currently a more niche aggro strategy, but Grue might help with how much damage the deck can push in, making kill turns just a little bit more consistent, and providing another avenue to put warriors on the board to trigger Into The Blastforge and Blastforge Blastforward, outside of Diary and Majik Summoning Wave.
The swift ability also has more utility than you'd expect on the Fortified side. Some Blastforge Fortified cards only work with a certain number of Blastforge cards like Blastforge Barrier Buckler and Blastforge Expulsion Cannons. Being able to put another Blastforge card into play during your opponent's turn can help to ensure that you can use these cards when you need to.
Blastforge Aggro hasn't seen the most play at the moment, but from recently playing the archetype, it's an exciting and surprisingly powerful archetype that should be incredibly happy to pick up a great new feathered friend!
The next spoiler I've got is a brand new Exalted so Swift it jumped forward as a future drop, giving us a Snapshot into what we might see in the set Cold Winds Of Change. As a Warrior loaded with powerful Keywords for a growing archetype, it'll certainly have a Shockwave on the battlefield, giving the Hero realm the ability to Retaliate against powerful threats.
Gee Deadshot! How come Taylor lets you have four keywords?
Swift, Snapshot, Shockwave, and Retaliate, oh my! With Deadshot we finally get to see the first of the Dark Wood Archers, with a keyword-packed Warrior.
Swift helps to avoid having a hand bricked with Warriors and no way to conscript them, and Shockwave helps to either take warriors off the board, or trigger your own Perish abilities, such as Fandorian Striker, Fulgoze. For Alero's standard midrange gameplan, this is a great Warrior to help control the board, and provide interaction whenever you need it.
Retaliate is key here too, letting Deadshot continue to be a significant threat on the board, punishing your opponent for attacking in, or for leaving you a buffed up Warrior to attack into.
Snapshot is nice here too for pushing in a little bit of extra damage, and especially being able to push in the last bit of damage that your opponent didn't expect to see. With Alero's heavy focus on Warrior Battle damage, Snapshot might just be the last 3 effect damage you need to finish off an opponent who thought they were safe behind the protection of a Welcome To Alburdunn or Ecrutek, The Wandering Warlock.
The main build of Alero currently is Fandorian Midrange, a grindy deck centrally focused on the Fandorian archetypal pieces for card advantage, selection, and threats. Fandorian midrange does however take advantage of other archetypal packages as well, most notably the Hood and Dark Wood cards. These two archetypes are currently largely linked, with Dark Wood Hood Hideout being a great example of this. Whilst Deadshot may not be a Fandorian, they are from the Dark Wood, which opens them up for more archetypal synergies in the deck.
Many of the current builds of Heroes center on combining the best of different archetype packages to get the most total power, and Deadshot is a great addition to the Dark Wood package, making the archetype just that little bit more appealing, potentially pushing players to focus more heavily on the archetype.
Dark Wood Discoveries, which lets you tutor for Deadshot, and protect it from destruction by card effects is a great example of this. With the amount of Armaments available for Heroes, this could let Deadshot become a huge threat on the board that you just can't get rid of. As more Dark Wood synergy pieces come out as well, Deadshot is likely to become more of a crucial archetypal synergy piece.
Past just Fandorian Midrange, Resistance Aggro is an underrepresented archetype may be interested in a warrior that can help to push in chip damage through Snapshot and Retaliate, especially with the interwoven synergies with the Hood package helping to tie the archetypes together. The Hood Becomes The Resistance can even turn Deadshot into a Resistance warrior, and reward them with an Armament, thanks to their swift ability.
Importantly, Deadshot is a Future Drop. similar to Lady Darksky, The Dusk Dawn Dragon or other promo cards brought forward from future sets. Deadshot will be officially released in the set Cold Winds Of Change, and we might just see the Dark Wood archetype get even more support when that set releases!
Keep your eyes peeled for more articles coming in spoiler season! Whilst these are the only Snapshot exclusive preview cards, I'll be breaking down some of the key cards that every Warlord will be receiving, diving into new potential archetypes, and talking about what might shake up the metagame the most!
