We've got a pretty notable selection of new hits on the SRL list, both to some notable card advantage engines, as well as every Retrieve Warrior, and the generic control tools of Welcome To Alburdunn and Mists From The Fata Morgana.
Right off the bat, two existing strong lists with a powerful first impression in the Wintertide metagame get their top end tuned down.
Titans have taken a big hit, with 2 major consistency pieces getting tuned down. Strength Of Atlas is a hit to almost every Titan deck, limiting the ability to find and setup any Titan Warrior of choice, but particularly Prometheus, with 4 different Rift Warriors now being available to combo with Strength. Unstoppable Titan War Smash is notable too, being used in both Gaia of course, as well as showing up recently in Ethereal Prometheus lists.
Titans have had strong showings for a bit, and these changes should tune down the highest ceiling plays for all Titan archetypes.
Onoskelis is also getting a big hit to her consistency, with both Advance and Sacrificial Throne Of The Hell-Plains. We've seen Onoskelis popping up somewhat recently with a force draw variant, but there's a lot of generic potential for the Fallen archetype right now to splash out.
Between this change and some we'll touch down the line, Onoskelis may struggle to find a strong footing in the upcoming metagame.
We've got two big changes to some significant categories of cards, let's explore the potential impact we might be seeing in the metagame!
Retrieve Warriors have been hit to 2 across the board, and while the hits may be equal, the impact may not quite be.
For Heroes, the hit will mostly be felt by Sapphire Combo style decks, as the only archetype interested in Vinlo, Forger Of The Resistance. Fandorians are impacted slightly, but 2 copies of Fandorian Freedom Fighter is already common in midrange lists.
For Orcs, there's effectively no change from a move to 3 to 2. With tools like Sildud's Call Of The Orcbane, Reservoirs Of Revival Ooze, and Orcbane March Of Death, Lambug will likely continue to be just as prevalent as it has been.
In Demons, the hit to Mammon comes at the same time as the previous hit to Advance Of The Fallen Armies, which overall makes for a heavy hit to the Fallen archetype.
In Undead, Sir Grimm Crimson, The Undead Prince being hit is more notable too. While decks can consistently find the Warrior with tutors like Meg'saria, Princess Of Lost Souls, Invitation To The Masquerade, and Rosaline, The Fractured Queen, it may slighlty limit other tutor options and have some impact on the Grimm and Vampire engines overall.
The hit to Phoebe isn't quite as big as the hit to Strength Of Atlas, but the combination of these changes will impact slightly the consistency of Primordials. That being said, I'd still expect Primordial lists to be able to consistently find Phoebe turn 1.
Storala is the final hit here, a slight nerf to the numbers for Blastforge Aggro, and no change to Frozen/Arcane lists which occasionally include a single tech copy of Storala.
Overall, the decks likely to be hit hardest by this change seem to be Sapphire Combo, Fallen Control, Grimm Midrange, and Vampire Aggro, although some of these decks will also be effected by other notable changes this list.
In this list, Mists From The Fata Morgana has gone down to a single copy, and Welcome To Alburdunn has been fully suspended. This batch of changes has some pretty heavy potential implications for the metagame, and it'll be interesting to see how decks evolve to survive these changes, or to take advantage of them.
Legion based control tools obviously raise in value as a result of these changes, but many Legions don't have access to super efficient/effective options. In lieu of that, many Legions which have been dependent on these generic tools will need to turn to other generic options, of which the most common is likely to be Ecrutek, The Wandering Warlock. With resilience to most negates, Ecrutek has historically been a harder to disrupt anti-aggro tool, and decks reliant on generic control tools will most likely start picking up more copies of Ecrutek to fill in that space.
In that vein, I anticipate that some of the most succesful decks to come out of this SRL list will be Aggro decks able to easily deal with Ecrutek, such as Alehouse Tempo with The Grand Alehouse, Freakshow Aggro with Sunrise, Consumed By Courage, Sharn Aggro with Great Orcbane Odyssey, and potentially burn decks like Black Magic Storm and Lost Messiah Tempo.
Overall, I think there's a possibility that we'll see the metagame move in a more tempo-oriented direction, as with a lack of defensive tools it'll become increasingly necessary to shut the prominent aggro decks down before they have the chance to pull ahead.
I do think that dedicated control lists like Michael Seraphim, Gaia Unstoppable, and Mal'ady Putrid may be better equipped thanks to archetypal control tools, but it's looking like Aggro & Tempo decks are the biggest winners from the current changes, and it'll take time to see if other decks are capable to keeping up.
